Manchester United owners Ineos currently have several headaches to contend with. With results declining over Christmas and tension between head coach Ruben Amorim and the club coming to the fore, it has not been an easy few weeks. Amorim is reportedly frustrated by the club’s lack of willingness to spend in the January transfer window to strengthen their depleted squad. Ineos’ financial issues It has been reported that club owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe may need to take a step back from the running of the club due to Ineos’ financial troubles. The British billionaire discussed United’s economic problems at the start of last year, but it now appears that his own company is also experiencing difficulties. The Telegraph reported at the end of the year that Ratcliffe faces an uphill battle to save the chemical company from “drowning under £18 billion of debt.” Outside investor needed Football Insider has reported that Ineos are beginning to accept that they may not be able to manage everything financially with the club and could now be seeking external assistance. The website states that, “sources have told Football Insider Man United could soon need more equity putting into the club after appearing to have reached their own debt limit.” The article also comments that, “it is believed investment from another third party may be required if the existing shareholders are either reluctant – or unable – to put cash into the business.” There has been speculation in the past that Ratcliffe may be keen to buy out the Glazers’ remaining 48.9% stake in the club, but this scenario now seems unviable given Ineos’ financial concerns. Rumours have circulated previously about potential investment from the Middle East, but none of these reports in the media have ever materialised. Final thoughts With ambitious plans for a 100,000-seat stadium and hopes to invest heavily in the midfield this summer, United fans will certainly be concerned by the news that Ineos are allegedly struggling to cope with the financial pressures of running the club.
