Amorim forced to go off script vs Leeds as United players show their true colours – opinion

Manchester United battled back to claim a point away at Elland Road against fierce rivals Leeds United on Sunday. It was the home side who took the lead in the 62nd minute, and it was at that point that Ruben Amorim finally made the required change. Given the Red Devils were missing most of their heavy hitters, the head coach opted for caution amid a lot of pressure following the disappointing Wolves draw last gameweek. The Portuguese tactician chose to start with a back-five, and would have preferred to come back with a point playing his own way, so as to send INEOS a message. He had no choice but to bring on his only senior attacker on the bench after the Leeds goal. Ruben Amorim forced to change Plenty have called for Amorim to play with four at the back owing to the personnel at hand, as the Newcastle win showed. And thankfully, he relented when going a goal down. Shifting to a 4-4-2, the team immediately looked better going forward, with Joshua Zirkzee’s introduction sparking the visitors back to life. His clever through ball was expertly turned home by Matheus Cunha for the equaliser, which came only three minutes after the opening goal. United had two forwards playing closer together, which meant they held the ball up better, while pushing the hosts back. The positive way United should have ideally started with from the off. The Dutchman, frequently linked with a January switch back to the Serie A, has struggled in recent weeks, with plenty terming the player as going through the motions ahead of a potential move. Brilliant response from Zirkzee That certainly did not look to be the case on Sunday. The former Bologna ace’s clever hold-up play, and excellent vision helping the 20-time English league champions carve out quite a few chances to win the game. The players and Joshua Zirkzee seemed to send a clear message as to which system suits them the most. If not for Benjamin Sesko fluffing his lines, and goalscorer Cunha’s wastefulness, United could well have grabbed all three points. But in the end, it seemed Amorim’s wish of not losing away to the arch-rivals came true.
