Sky Sports Journalists Reveal Man Utd Have Joined Race To Sign Player Who Has Been Labelled The New Saliba

BACK Man Utd have entered the battle for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, according to Sky Sports News reporters Amar Mehta and Dan Khan. The 20-year-old has been the subject of interest from several Premier League clubs over the last six months. Arsenal and Crystal Palace were the first to be mentioned as potential suitors for Jacquet. Since then, though, Chelsea and Liverpool have entered the mix, with United the latest to make their interest known. The Man Utd target has been compared to Saliba Jacquet has been widely praised for his performances since breaking into Rennes’ first team in the second half of last season. Due to his strength and composure on the ball, some have likened him to his fellow countryman William Saliba. With just over 50 first-team appearances under his belt, though, Jacquet is still relatively inexperienced. It is believed that the player rejected overtures from other clubs last summer in order to continue his development at Rennes, which seems like a very sensible decision. Could an approach be made for Jacquet in January? At the moment, Ruben Amorim’s side are prioritising a move for a central midfielder, while another forward may also be brought in if Joshua Zirkzee does leave Old Trafford before the transfer window closes. Sky Sports do suggest that a scramble for Jacquet’s signature may ensue if one or more teams does chance their arm with a bid this month, but there are no suggestions that the centre-back is close to leaving Rennes at the moment. It is more likely that the Frenchman is being looked at with the summer in mind. Harry Maguire is out of contract at the end of the season and Amorim said last week that negotiations over an extension have not really progressed. Want more news on Man Utd?
