United young gun Jack Fletcher shares his “unbelievable” reaction to huge 45-minute shift vs. Newcastle

Manchester United talent Jack Fletcher has issued his verdict on playing 45 minutes as the team beat Newcastle 1-0 on Boxing Day. More minutes for Fletcher Fletcher made his first senior team appearance at Old Trafford as United clinched all three points against the Magpies to move to fifth place in the Premier League table. Patrick Dorgu scored United’s only goal of the match, producing a stunning volley in the 24th minute. Mason Mount sustained an injury which saw him withdrawn at the interval and replaced by Fletcher, who saw out the rest of the game in an advanced midfield position. It was just Fletcher’s second appearance for the United first team, having made his bow in last weekend’s defeat at Aston Villa. Though his inexperience was evident, Fletcher displayed clear potential. He performed solidly, and increased minutes will only build his strength and confidence. He spoke to MUTV after the final whistle and reacted to the opportunity. Fletcher reacts The 18-year-old told United media, “No, no. It’s the best six days of my life. I couldn’t have asked for any more. Debut against Villa and to come and play here, which is unbelievable. I couldn’t ask for any more.” “Best Christmas ever! My mum can’t beat that, can she? Unbelievable!” Asked about coming on at half-time at Old Trafford, Fletcher explained, “It was way different [from being called up vs. Villa]. It was unexpected.” “Mase [Mount] pulled up with something in the changing room and I was just told ‘Go get ready’, the manager gave me a few instructions and I just came on and tried to perform as well as I could.” Fletcher insisted that there’s plenty more to come from him. “I think so. It might take a while to adjust to the tempo and intensity. It was very tough out there – good team, Newcastle. Heavy on the legs and it was a shift for 45 minutes of defending, but I thought we did well and then hopefully I can showcase my talent more.” Asked what the difference is between youth football and first-team action, Fletcher replied, “It’s a big jump. It’s a massive jump.” “It’s just the intensity and the quality of the players. Playing against Bruno Guimaraes today…he’s an unbelievable player. For my second game, to come on and play 45 minutes against him, Joelinton and [Sandro] Tonali – they’re all class players and I enjoyed it but I took on the challenge.” “It’s just the intensity and the running. I’ve got to track every run and you can’t switch off. That’s probably the difference. On being the 255th academy graduate, Fletcher described it as a “proud moment” for him and his family.
