How United will cope without Fernandes

Wednesday 24 December 2025 14:01Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is confident his squad will handle the absence of Bruno Fernandes when Newcastle United visit Old Trafford on Boxing Day. When asked about Bruno’s absence during Wednesday’s press conference, Ruben hinted he might look towards youth. “We have other players, we need to see different ways of playing. I think Jack Fletcher did a good job. When we have this opportunity we need to give space to players like Jack.”Quizzed on how Fletcher and his fellow debutant Shea Lacey have been this week, Ruben continued: “Normal. They are normal. They are good kids.  “The behaviour that they showed is really good but I don’t have that feeling that they were a little bit different because they played for Manchester United. Nothing different that I saw.”The subject of Bruno’s injury dominated the Christmas eve press conference, but Ruben was calm and revealed the message he has relayed to the squad. “It’s impossible to replace Bruno, I said that this morning to the team. We need to take the good thing that a lot of people need to step up.  “It’s not just the creation but the set-pieces and organising the team. That’s a good opportunity for everyone to step up. We lost Bruno in set-pieces, we lost Bryan [Mbeumo] and Amad in set-pieces, but it’s a chance for others to step up.”Behind the scenes: Squad photo day VideoBehind the scenes: Squad photo dayBEHIND THE SCENES | Take a closer look at a wholesome – and historic – morning in the Carrington gym…In terms of leadership, Amorim will look to his other experienced players. “He [Bruno] understands every position on the field. He pays attention to every detail.  “When you make a substitution he’s always the guy telling people where they should be. It’s a big opportunity for Shaw, Licha. Big opportunity for the other guys.” Part two of Ruben’s press conference will be available from 22:30 GMT on Thursday. From our family to yours:Behind the scenes GalleryClub photographer Ash Donelon was our roving camera operator at the 2025/26 squad photo. Our 2025/26 squad photos GalleryTake a look at each team picture – men’s, women’s and the joint version – in more detail!’MUDSA embodies what the club represents’ Video’MUDSA embodies what the club represents’ Our Disabled Supporters’ Association has a special place in the United community and particularly at Christmas time…Wednesday 24 December 2025 14:01Back to Top
