“Waste of time:” Gary Neville slams surprise senior United player for shambolic display in loss to Everton

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has called out one player in a particular during what was an embarrassing loss to Everton at Old Trafford on Monday night. Despite going down to ten men due to a red card in the 13th minute, Everton managed to score a single goal which proved enough for a surprise away victory for the underdogs. Following the frustrating defeat, Neville pulled no punches in his criticism of manager Ruben Amorim, calling him out for his formation as well as substitution choices. But even after his tirade against the Man United boss, Neville was not done. He still had a bone to pick with one player in particular. Neville lets rip While providing co-commentary during the match for Sky Sports, Neville became outraged with defender Luke Shaw. “Shaw is ambling forward. It has been bugging me for the last 20 minutes and now I’m just going to say it,” Neville complained during the match. “He is ambling. Look at him. You can’t do that,” the former United skipper furiously pointed out. “That is a waste of time. Honestly, it’s a waste of time. It’s not conning anyone.” Having completed his attacks on individuals for their personal errors, Neville went on to criticise the entire team due to one worrying issue. The core reason for United’s defeat “It just smelt of complacency. They weren’t at it from the beginning. That is a bad one for United,” the former defender explained. “I think they’ve been a lot better in the last few weeks. That probably takes us back to Brentford away. You can’t go from the fight that they showed in certain games to that. It just erodes confidence, it erodes trust.” “It’s almost as if you’ve gone sort of like two or three steps forward, everyone’s feeling a little bit better about themselves, and you’ve just gone back to the start again,” Neville observed, reflecting the feelings of many United fans at present. If the Everton loss provides any lessons for United, it’s that the players need to remain aggressive on the field until the final whistle, particularly when it comes to turning statistical domination into the final finished product, namely goals. Given United’s bigger stature and clear domination on the day, the defeat to Everton was nothing short of a disappointment, with the likes of Shaw clearly in the limelight for the wrong reasons.
