Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood was at the centre of more controversy at the weekend. Great form this season Greenwood has thrived since his exit from Old Trafford. He had an impressive loan spell at Getafe in Spain where he was of interest to numerous big teams in the country such as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. It was Olympique de Marseille who finally coughed up the money to sign the United academy product in 2024. He scored 22 goals in all competitions for the French club last season and also notched six assists. Despite last season’s impressive haul, he is managing to outdo himself this season. Greenwood has fired in 11 goals and four assists in 16 appearances this season as Les Olympiens find themselves second in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain. Weekend controversy The 24 year old was massive at the weekend for his club, scoring a brace as they ran out 5-1 winners over OGC Nice. His first effort came from cutting in from the left hand side and his right footed effort was deflected into the net. Greenwood’s second and his side’s third came just after half-time when he beat the defence for speed and skill before firing in a lethal strike into the bottom corner. Massive brawl The Daily Star report that “a mass brawl broke out after his first goal, which gave ex-Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi’s side a 2-0 lead during the opening 45 minutes.” The paper adds that, “as Greenwood celebrated and appeared to taunt Nice fans by sticking out his tongue in their direction, ultras responded by hurling objects, according to GFFN, with referee Jeremy Pignard temporarily halting the game as items rained down on the pitch.” Marseille left back Emerson Palmieri was hit by a lighter and a brawl broke out on the touchline, which spilled over onto the pitch. Greenwood’s two goals means he is now the outright top scorer in Ligue 1 this season.
