Manchester United are expected to enter the market in pursuit of a new midfielder in the January window. However, fans have conceded that it won’t be a marquee signing like they’d have hoped in the summer. While United do retain interest in the likes of coveted stars Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson, it’s safe to say their clubs have ruled out the possibility of any of the players leaving mid-season.Additionally, sanctioning a deal that could well exceed the £100 million mark isn’t viable for INEOS in the New Year, especially after over £200 million was shelled out before the season began.United add Conor Gallagher and Joao Gomes to January shortlist(Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)As such, the board and the scouts have been made to identify alternatives whom they could acquire in a cut-price deal – perhaps even on loan.Ben Jacobs has named two targets who are set to be ‘definitely available’ in two months’ time: Conor Gallagher and Joao Gomes. The latter hasn’t been put up for sale by Wolverhampton Wanderers, but their dismal start to the campaign could see them forced to part ways with several key players – Gomes being one.As for Gallagher, he is navigating the term playing a heavily reduced role under Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, having started only twice in their opening 12 La Liga matches. What one journalist is hearing about Gomes/Gallagher(Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images)“There’s probably only two definitive targets on the Manchester United list that are definitely, I would say, available during the month of January or potentially available. The first is obviously Conor Gallagher,” Jacobs told The United Stand.“And then you have Joao Gomes, who I wouldn’t, and I want to be clear here, say is available, but what I would say is that suitors may be encouraged to try their luck in January looking at the league table (Wolves being 20th).”
