Manchester United have produced numerous young stars from their academy over the years. Many have gone on to have incredibly successful careers at Old Trafford but some have slipped through the net. Therefore, The Peoples Person asked its readers to vote for who they thought is the academy player that they most regret the club getting rid of. Mason Greenwood United fans have voted Greenwood as the club’s biggest regret. 46% of fans believe the exciting forward is the one that got away. Greenwood has been in immaculate form for Olympique de Marseille over the past two seasons. He currently has 11 goals and assists in as many games in Ligue 1 this season. Nonetheless, Greenwood’s situation is a little different as the club did not get rid of him owing to his form on the pitch but due to his legal problems. Gerard Pique 24% of readers felt that Pique is the player the club should regret the most letting go of. At the time, United had two all-time great centre backs in front of him in Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Moreover, it has been stated that Pique wanted a return to Catalonia and was never going to stay in England even if the club had wanted him too. The central defender would go on to be one of his generation’s greatest centre backs, playing 616 times for Barcelona. Scott McTominay 14% of supporters feel that McTominay is the player United should regret selling. The United academy product played a pivotal role in SSC Napoli winning Serie A last season and came 18th in the Ballon d’Or rankings. He underlined his importance on the global football stage with a sublime bicycle kick for Scotland last night as they secured safe passage to the World Cup finals in the summer. Paul Pogba 6% of fans feel that Pogba is the player that United should most regret letting go of. The Frenchman first left United in 2012 in search of more gametime and succeeded in Italy with Juventus. He turned himself into one of the most sought-after midfielders in world football and finally returned to Old Trafford in 2016, staying until 2022. As Pogba had a second bite of the cherry at his United career, there is perhaps less thoughts of “what could have been?”. Alvaro Carreras 5% of readers feel that United should regret letting go of the Spaniard the most. Despite numerous problems at left back a couple of seasons ago, Erik ten Hag refused to give the youngster a chance. He since moved to SL Benfica and then to Real Madrid in the summer. The left back has gone on to secure a first team spot and a former United scout has lambasted the club’s decision to sell him last year. The rest 2% of fans feel that Dean Henderson was most unfairly sold and he has gone on to win the FA Cup and Community Shield for Crystal Palace this year. Another 2% feel that Anthony Elanga is the player United fans should feel most frustrated by letting go after he secured a big money summer move to Newcastle United from Nottingham Forest in the summer. 1% felt that someone else from the academy deserved to be the player fans should be most disheartened about. – The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade.
