Joshua Zirkzee has been urged to revive his career away from his current Manchester United struggles. The forward has been facing a hugely uncertain future in recent weeks, with reports suggesting he’s ready to pack his bags and embark on a mid-season switch elsewhere. How Zirkzee is faring in 2025/2026 thus far(Photo by Ben Roberts Photo/Getty Images)That’s because Zirkzee has been limited to an incredibly reduced role under Ruben Amorim this season, making only four appearances in the opening 10 matches of the Premier League campaign. He has been an unused substitute for six of those games and has totalled a measly 82 minutes on the pitch, with his lengthiest cameo coming in the form of a 59-minute stint off the bench when he replaced injured teammate Matheus Cunha against Burnley in August.Since then, the Dutchman’s outings have not exceeded the 10-minute mark. You could understand Zirkzee wanting to explore alternative options in his current situation anyway, but even more so considering we’re approaching a World Cup year.Ronald Koeman hasn’t utilised the 24-year-old since last November, so the chances of Zirkzee making the Netherlands squad next summer are reducing with every week he doesn’t play.Ruud Gullit believes Zirkzee should return to Italy (Photo by Mike Hewitt/Getty Images)In regard to the options he’s likely to have in the event United allow him to leave on loan, West Ham are prepared to offer him the prospect of continuing in the English top flight.Abroad, however, AS Roma have also established their interest in bringing Zirkzee back to Serie A, where he spent two years with Bologna prior to his £36.5 million Old Trafford switch. From Ruud Gullit’s point of view, the player has to opt for the latter.“I think from my point of view that he should have stayed in Italy, because he was really striving,” Gullit said of his compatriot, via the Metro.“He was really doing well at Bologna, and I was hoping that he would go to Milan. I think that as soon as he went to Manchester United, it was the wrong decision.“I mean, for a lot of players, moving to Manchester United has been the wrong decision. And whoever leaves them, plays well everywhere around Europe. I just hope that there’s a solution for him.“Go back to Italy on loan if you can. Just play football. He’s a good player. But at the moment, it’s difficult at Manchester United.”
