Video: United hero named PL Player of the Matchday after incredible showing in Anfield victory

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has had one of his most memorable weeks as a professional player.

Redemption

The England international spent the majority of the 2022/2023 season on the bench under Erik ten Hag.

In that summer, it appeared that United would finally sell him with West Ham United showing significant interest in the player.

Nonetheless, a deal did not materialise and the defender has since slowly rebuilt his United career.

The mistakes are nowhere near as frequent as they used to be, with Ruben Amorim’s back five offering him much more protection.

Moreover, he has also developed a knack of scoring crucial goals like a later equaliser versus FC Porto and last-gasp winners versus Leicester City and Olympique Lyonnais.

He added a winner at Anfield to his collection last Sunday which provided an absolutely vital victory for the Red Devils and their first at the stadium since 2016.

Reward

It wasn’t just his goal though that impressed at the weekend but alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw, he played a huge part in holding Liverpool to one goal.

As a result of the match, he was named by the Premier League as the Player of the Matchweek.

Maguire made a total of eight clearances in the match and won five of his nine aerial battles.

He also made one interception and blocked one goal bound attempt in the match.

Commenting on the game he claimed that owing to his contract situation, he doesn’t know if he will ever play at Anfield again for United.

Maguire explained, “I’m in my last year now, so this could be the last time I played at Anfield for this club, so it’s really important that I’ve come here and ticked that one off.”
