West Bromwich Albion boss Ryan Mason has provided an injury update on Manchester United star Toby Collyer ahead of Wednesday’s meeting at Watford.
Collyer injured
Collyer sealed a loan move to West Brom during the summer transfer window after it became clear he would struggle for playing time if he remained at United.
With United signing Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes was required to drop into the deeper midfield role typically held by Collyer. Add in a lighter fixture schedule from missing out on Europe, and opportunities for Collyer would have been severely limited.
Collyer made his full home debut for West Brom during Sunday’s 2-1 win against Preston.
However, the Carrington academy graduate was forced off inside 15 minutes of the second half after picking up an injury. Collyer limped off the pitch and was replaced by Jayson Molumby.
Mason spoke to the media and revealed that Collyer experienced some hamstring discomfort, similar to the same issues that previously affected him at United.
Mason gives update on Collyer
Mason said [as quoted by Express and Star], “Hopefully, it’s not too bad. He had a few injuries at Man Utd last season in a similar area.”
“He’s a young boy, he’s still growing, he’s still developing, and we need to be aware of that. So, yes, the scan come back, it’s something that’s going to keep him out, but hopefully not for too long.”
Mason continued, “We have the scan where we can work off but it’s really important to treat the body, treat the symptoms and how the player feels.”
“I don’t like putting a timeframe on injuries because then that limits the mental side and the body’s capacity to get back sooner.”
Collyer registered an assist during West Brom’s victory over Preston.
He will definitely miss the Watford game but it seems the United man could return soon and hopefully, make an impact at the Hawthorns.
