Man United Legend Criticises Club For Selling “25 Goal A Year” Forward

Peter Schmeichel believes his former club Man United have made a mistake in offloading Rasmus Hojlund.

Since leaving Old Trafford, the striker has been in phenomenal form for club and country, and Schmeichel claims he would have been a regular scorer for the Red Devils if he had been given the right support:

“You only have to see what he’s doing at Napoli with Kevin de Bruyne and Scott McTominay to play with – he’s scoring goals.”

“I’ve consistently said this for two-and-a-half years – Rasmus Hojlund will be a 25-goal-a-year striker for Manchester United, but he needs service.”

“We let him go on the stats that he scored very little goals last season and bring Sesko in at the time we bring in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo, who would give Hojlund first-class service.”

Napoli have effectively signed Hojlund

Fans who believe that United can bring the forward back should not get their hopes up. While he is technically on loan with the Serie A champions at the moment, the move will almost certainly become permanent.

An obligation to buy for £38m will kick in if Napoli qualify for the Champions League, and even if that doesn’t happen, the Italian club also have a purchase option they can trigger before the end of the season.

Were Man United too quick to get rid of the striker?

It’s difficult to say whether Hojlund would have been as prolific in front of goal if he had stayed in England.

While Schmeichel is correct that Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha could offer more support to the 22-year-old, he would still have faced other issues.

The Premier League is the toughest in the world, and it may simply be the case that Hojlund has found his level in Italy, much like Scott McTominay.
