Manchester United made a number of summer transfers to reinforce the squad, but they still have a long way to go before their squad is competitive on all fronts. The lack of European competitions this season allows them to survive with what they have right now.
The Red Devils signed attackers and a goalkeeper during the transfer window but did not focus on midfield or defence. These are areas that Manchester United may need to address in upcoming transfer windows.
Now, according to German outlet BILD, Manchester United are showing serious interest in signing talented Bayern Munich central defender Dayot Upamecano, as his contract negotiations with the Bavarian club seem to be stalling.
Bayern have agreed on the base salary with the player’s camp, but the two parties are unable to reach a consensus on the signing bonus the player would receive. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, clubs are understandably attentive.
Apart from Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Barcelona are all keen on signing the Frenchman and view him as a bargain. His contract situation allows them to either swoop in and secure a deal in January or wait for a free transfer in the summer.
Upamecano is a typical modern-day defender. He is extremely physical and does all the things a proper central defender should do, but at the same time, he is also a ball-playing centre-back, using either his passing range or dribbling prowess to bypass lines of pressure.
At Manchester United, the centre-back roster is quite well-stocked. Matthijs de Ligt is a top option to have in the squad, while Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are excellent developmental bets. Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw are solid, but injury-prone. Harry Maguire is a good squad player to have.
Signing Upamecano would be an excellent decision for Manchester United. Although they have competition to face, should they be able to convince him, it would be a massive coup. Let’s wait and see how the negotiations play out.
