One United star had ‘probably his best PL performance’ for the club on Sat, he got a ‘standing ovation’

Mason Mount has earned plaudits for putting in a stellar shift against Sunderland on Saturday.

The Manchester United faithful will be crossing their fingers that this is the start of a prolonged run of form for Mount, whose unrelenting injury setbacks have frequently rendered him unable to even get a solid run of matches under his belt.

He got United off the mark against the Black Cats over the weekend when notching his first goal of the campaign, aiding the Reds on their way to a crucial victory before club action halts for the international break.

Benjamin Sesko extended United’s lead just 23 minutes later to secure back-to-back goals, having scored in the defeat to Brentford, whilst also making for a cagey second half of keeping Sunderland at bay.

Mount was withdrawn in the 65th minute in place of summer signing Matheus Cunha, with his efforts rightfully recognised by the supporters in attendance.

“Standing ovation for Mount as he makes way for Cunha. Probably his best Premier League performance for United, certainly at Old Trafford,” said Samuel Luckhurst.

Even with his troubling fitness record, it was always anticipated that the former Chelsea man would play a key role under Ruben Amorim when available.

Amorim ‘loves’ Mount

When Amorim took the reins last November, he singled out Mount for praise in one of his first press conferences, saying of the No.7: “I have to tell you, I love that kid.

“You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries [and] he was not on the pitch, but now, he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

United forked out £55 million to sign him from rivals Chelsea back in July 2023, pledging an additional £5m in add-ons.

It was a controversial signing at the time, as Mount had only a year remaining on his terms at Stamford Bridge and had shown no intention of extending his stay.

Yet, the Reds stepped in to facilitate the deal, and will now hoping he can really start to live up to his hefty price tag throughout the term.
