3 final-third passes, 3 ball recoveries, 1 sumptuous finish: This United maestro suits Amorim’s system like a glove

Manchester United cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday. This was their third consecutive win at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim this season.

Not only that, but the team kept their first clean sheet of the season, and the win comes at the right time for both the club and the head coach.

First-half goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko sealed the deal, while debutant Senne Lammens also impressed in goal.

The Portuguese tactician took the bold call of bringing back Mount into the starting XI while dropping Matheus Cunha to the bench.

Mount with the stunning impact

And the decision paid dividends within the opening 10 minutes as the ex-Chelsea ace scored with a scrumptious finish from Bryan Mbeumo’s cross.

It was a difficult ball to control inside the box, but he expertly evaded his marker, brought down the ball like a maestro before calmly slotting past the in-form Sunderland keeper.

Mason Mount’s game by numbers vs. Sunderland:

84% pass accuracy
37 total touches
4 touches in the box
4 defensive contributions
3 passes into the final third
3 ball recoveries
3 take-ons
1 chance created
1 shot
1 goal

It was a finish of a man who knows exactly how to play in the head coach’s often-flawed system.

Having played in a similar style during his time at Stamford Bridge, the Englishman is qualified to start games and he proved it against the Black Cats.

Perfect fit under Amorim

He completed three final-third passes, while attempting three take-ons and created one chance. His most useful asset is his energy and drive without the ball.

In his 65 minutes, the England international completed three ball recoveries while making a total of four defensive contributions (all stats via Statman Dave).

His energy, and ability to play in multiple positions makes him the perfect weapon for Amorim and he suits the system like a glove.

Fans will love to always see Amorim’s strongest attack in action, but Mason Mount is making quite the case for his own inclusion.
