Four things we learnt as United cruise to much-needed 2-0 victory over Sunderland

Manchester United welcomed Sunderland to Old Trafford in their final match before the October international break.

Senne Lammens started in goal to make his debut for the club after his summer move from Royal Antwerp. Diogo Dalot started at left wing back with Luke Shaw, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro forming the back three.

Amad returned at right wing back against his former side with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro starting in the midfield.

Mason Mount returned to the starting line up with Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko in attack.

Here are four things we learnt from the match.

Mason Mount makes his mark

Mason Mount started the season in fantastic form but as has been the story of his United career, he picked up an injury versus Burnley in August.

He returned to the starting line-up this afternoon against Sunderland and soon reminded everyone exactly what he can do.

The England international wonderfully controlled a cross from Bryan Mbeumo and slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner.

He will clearly gets his chances at Old Trafford as long as Ruben Amorim is in the hot seat owing to the high regard the coach holds him in.

If United are able to count on a fully fit Mount, they will have a quality player at their disposal. What he must now do is finally banish his injury demons.

Benjamin Sesko lights up Old Trafford

The Slovenia international has not had the easiest start to his career at United, struggling to get into the team at the beginning of his Old Trafford career.

Nonetheless, since the September international break, he has been involved from the start of every Premier League game.

He grabbed his first goal for the Red Devils last weekend against Brentford and scored his first Old Trafford goal this afternoon.

Sesko showed fantastic striking instincts in the box to turn in a flick in from a long throw in front of the Stretford End.

United fans will be hoping it is just the first of many at The Theatre of Dreams.

Amad and Mbeumo partnership

There was much excitement in the summer when United sign Mbeumo for the right ten position.

Many supporters dreamed of watching him link up with United’s other exciting winger, Amad.

The connection hasn’t always been there this season, but this afternoon demonstrated the fantastic potential the partnership could have.

The dynamic duo attacked with pace and both had long-range efforts well saved by the Sunderland keeper.

If United are to pick up regular points against the bottom half, they will need these two to continue to threaten as they did today.

Slowly rebuilding home form

United struggled on so many accounts last year, it was often hard to keep up.

One thing they were really dismal at was getting results at home.

They only won seven home games all season and three in the first half of 2025.

With the victory over Sunderland, they have already won three out of four home league games this season. What’s more, their loss was a very strong performance against Arsenal that really should have been at least a draw.

There is much work to be done, but making Old Trafford a much more imposing fortress would certainly help.

Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
