Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens impressed in his debut half for the club against Sunderland.
Lammens makes United debut
Signed from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day, Lammens has had to wait for his United debut as Ruben Amorim demonstrated a clear preference for Altay Bayindir between the sticks.
It was thought that Andre Onana’s exit to Turkish side Trabzonspor would pave the way for Lammens to instantly slot into the starting XI but that was not the case.
It was all the more baffling that he wasn’t given any minutes despite Bayindir’s repeated mistakes game after game.
However, in a must-win clash vs. Sunderland, Amorim finally named Lammens in his starting XI and the Belgian did not disappoint.
Lammens stuns in his first opening 45 minutes for United
United enjoyed a superb first half against the Black Cats, racing to a two-goal lead within 30 minutes. Mason Mount broke the deadlock with a sensational finish before Benjamin Sesko doubled the advantage with the most tender of touches inside a crowded box.
A number of United players caught the eye, including Lammens.
His distribution, in particular, was outstanding, with the 23-year-old repeatedly finding a red shirt with pinpoint long passes.
Lammens looked composed in possession, linking up well with Matthijs de Ligt, Luke Shaw, and Leny Yoro. He showed great calmness on the ball, never appearing rattled even under pressure from a Sunderland player.
The former Antwerp man didn’t have plenty to do but when called to action, he kept out a powerful Granit Xhaka effort to maintain United’s healthy lead.
One of Bayindir’s biggest weaknesses is his vulnerability when dealing with set-pieces, but on the one occasion Lammens was tested, he confidently came off his line to claim the ball and ease the pressure on his defenders.
If the early signs are anything to go by, there’s plenty to be excited about when it comes to Lammens.
