If Manchester United were to materialise their interest in Adam Wharton next year, they may be able to snap him up for a reduced fee.
The Red Devils’ interest in Wharton dates as far back as 12 months ago, when they identified him as a potential successor to Christian Eriksen and replacement for the ageing Casemiro.

However, United never went as far as tabling a bid or making a formal approach to the player. Instead, they prioritised reinforcements in alternative areas of the pitch, signing Patrick Dorgu in January of this year and adding an entirely new frontline to Ruben Amorim’s ranks over the course of the summer window.
It’s thought that, in 2026, INEOS will turn their attention to the middle of the park. Whether that’ll be in the winter or at the end of the season remains to be seen, although based on the high-spend period they’ve just overseen and the reduced budget from no European football, you’d imagine it’d be a more long-term plan.

They may also opt to wait until the end of the term due to a clause included in Wharton’s terms with Palace.
Assuming he doesn’t pen a new deal in the coming months, there will be a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ (Ben Jacobs) that’ll become active next summer, allowing him to leave for £60-65 million.
It’s certainly still an incredibly costly price, but there’s no doubt his suitors will be keeping tabs on how he fares in the Premier League and in the Conference League to determine whether such a fee is justifiable.
