Man United are expected to reinforce their midfield in the New Year, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Answering a question in the GiveMeSport newsletter on whether another player will be signed, in addition to Cristian Orozco, Romano said:
“Yes, Orozco is for the future. I expect Man United to bring in a new important midfielder in 2026.”
Romano gave the “Here we go” signal to Orozco’s move to Old Trafford earlier this week, with the club expected to pay $1m to seal his signature next summer when he turns 18. You can read our profile on the youngster here.
Man United could target one of several midfielders
Just before the transfer window closed last month, it is believed that the Red Devils made an enquiry about signing Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher on loan.
The proposal was knocked back but an attempt to snap up the former Chelsea player could be revived during the January transfer window or at the end of the season.
The main alternatives are likely to be Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who could soon have a £75m+ release clause in his contract, or Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
A move for the Cameroon international was considered in the summer but the Red Devils opted against making a formal offer after being scared off by the asking price.
A midfielder may leave Old Trafford
While a new signing could be brought in to strengthen options in the middle of the park, there are still question marks about the future of Kobbie Mainoo.
The 20-year-old asked for a loan move in August to get more game time, but the request was turned down. Since then, he has continued to be used sparingly by head coach Ruben Amorim.
Of course, if the Portuguese manager is sacked, Mainoo could yet get a fresh start, but if Amorim stays in charge, the midfielder may push for an exit.
