INEOS’ key target to replace Amorim pours fuel on the fire as he reveals he “follows” the situation at United

Manchester United remain linked with multiple managerial candidates following their prolonged struggles under Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese head coach was a huge hit with Sporting and arrived at Old Trafford in November last year to replace Erik ten Hag.

INEOS were looking to steer the Red Devils back to their glory days and zeroed in on Amorim as the right man for the job.

Nearly eleven months later, the Premier League giants find themselves in troubled waters once again. The Portuguese has won just 18 of his 49 games in charge, losing 19 more.

After finishing 15th in the Premier League last season, the club are now 14th in the league table after six games in the 2024/25 campaign, with two wins and three defeats so far.

Amorim under pressure at Old Trafford

Amorim is feeling the heat at Old Trafford after investing heavily in the squad over the summer. Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Senne Lammens, and Diego Leon were all signed to improve the squad, but results have failed to improve so far.

A lot of questions have been raised about the Portuguese’s tactics, with fans yet to be convinced by his 3-4-3 system. Some of Amorim’s decisions have drawn controversy as well, including his inability to include Kobbie Mainoo in the starting XI.

Recent reports have suggested that United are keeping their options open and have already identified potential replacements, including Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

The Austrian has done a tremendous job since taking charge at Selhurst Park in 2024. Glasner helped the Eagles win the FA Cup last season and also won the Community Shield this campaign.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt manager is in the final year of his contract, further adding to speculation regarding his future. Glasner has now responded to rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford to take Amorim’s place.

Glasner refuses to dismiss United links

Glasner recently sat down with the Austrian Edition of Kicker for a chat, where he was asked: “There are a lot of rumours circulating about you again. From Manchester United in the short term to all sorts of top clubs after 2026. Are these reports annoying or amusing you, and can you reveal when you and Palace plan to discuss your future again?”

The former Eintracht Frankfurt manager remained coy on the matter, responding: “I follow all the rumours – and that’s all there is – neutrally and completely relaxed. Focusing on the daily work with my players and coaches, and trying to enjoy it as much as possible.”

Glasner has won 33 of his 71 games in charge of Crystal Palace so far, registering a 46.48% win ratio. The Eagles are currently on an 18-game unbeaten run, and are third in the Premier League table. They are also the only team in the league yet to lose a game this season and defeated reigning champions Liverpool by a 2-1 scoreline over the weekend.

Interestingly, the Austrian also deploys a 3-4-3 system at Selhurst Park, but is more flexible in his approach compared to Amorim.
