Manchester United are still actively scouring the market for a goalkeeper – less than a month after they welcomed Senne Lammens on a five-year deal.
Bizarrely, reports are suggesting that a new No.1 is being targeted by Ruben Amorim, despite the club shelling out £18.2 million to bring in Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
United shortlist Mike Maignan as ‘keeper search continues
talkSPORT claims the United boss is ‘pushing’ for a more seasoned shot-stopper to be added to his ranks, with Mike Maignan, 30, believed to be United’s leading candidate.
The Red Devils will, however, face stern competition in their potential pursuit from Chelsea, who had a £25m bid rebuffed by AC Milan in the summer window.
It’s expected they will return for Maignan in 2026, especially in the aftermath of Robert Sanchez’s calamitous start to the term, which saw him sent off inside five minutes at Old Trafford over the weekend.
To make matters more interesting for his suitors, Maignan is out of contract with Milan next June, meaning he can open talks with foreign clubs and perhaps even agree a pre-contract as early as January.
United fans assumed Lammens would become Amorim’s No.1 this month
From a United perspective, it’s certainly not a great vote of faith for Lammens.
The young Belgian was acquired on deadline day at the start of September following a string of concerning displays from Altay Bayindir, whilst Andre Onana’s horror show against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup was deemed something of a final straw for Amorim.
After Lammens officially made the switch, Onana was subsequently shipped off to Turkey to join Trabzonspor on loan. There is no buy option included in the deal, but his United career is as good as over.
Having been at Amorim’s disposal for a month, the 23-year-old has still yet to make his debut. Instead, he’s watched on for the matches against Manchester City and Chelsea while Bayindir has occupied the void between the sticks.
Should his omission continue, it’ll only raise questions as to why United went out and actually signed him in the first place.
