“Deserves all the praise”: Amorim hails standout United start after landmark achievement in victory vs. Chelsea

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has hailed Bruno Fernandes after he achieved something special in the victory over Chelsea.

United beat Chelsea

United headed into the meeting desperate for a win and got off to a superb start when Robert Sanchez was sent off for bringing down Bryan Mbeumo inside the box.

Amorim’s men capitalised on their numerical superiority, with Fernandes firing home Patrick Dorgu’s delivery.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 37th minute through a Casemiro header. Casemiro was then sent off just before the break for a second bookable offence.

Trevoh Chalobah’s late goal threatened to spoil the party for United but they held on to claim all three points.

Fernandes’ goal against the Blues was his 100th for the club since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, and Amorim lauded the skipper for achieving the landmark figure.

Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, Amorim also gave his verdict on the performance and result.

Amorim’s post-match remarks

“It was really important, I think we deserved it, but we complicated our lives. I think we started the game really well in terms of aggression and pushing the opponent to show that we were there.”

“Even to bring our fans with us. Of course, the sending off of the goalkeeper helped us a lot. But we were in control and we scored two goals, and with everything going well, we complicated it with the send-off (Casemiro).”

“The second half, I think we managed it well, but in the end…like the last 15 minutes, it was tough for us. They scored a goal, we suffered together and we managed to win.”

Asked about the players’ desire to win, Amorim remarked, “I think they showed that. But we also showed that when everything is going well, we arrange something to make it difficult. But then again, just the way we started the game, first ball, second ball. I remember when we scored the first one, we had many situations…three against one, three against two, goalkeeper outside the box and the last pass we’re not being perfect in that moment.”

“And that can help us a lot to control the game and to win. But we suffered together in the end and that was a good thing. If you look at the game, we deserved to win.”

Asked about Fernandes reaching a century of goals for United and being an influential squad member, Amorim answered, “That is the most important thing – the influence that he has on the squad.”

“Sometimes it’s not the perfect…he’s not in the best position to be the main man in every game. But the point of the captain is to be the best he can be in every situation to help the team to be better, and he is doing that.”

“I think he can play better, but everyone can play better in our team. It’s really important. We can change his position, we can give different things to the team. He has a lot of quality near the box. He has a lot of quality building up and he deserves all the praise.”

Amorim applauded his team’s urgency versus Chelsea but stressed that the key now is to build on the positive momentum from the victory.

On Casemiro’s red card, Amorim told reporters, “He was really aggressive. Of course he needs to do better in that moment, in that place. But since the beginning of the game we showed that we wanted to win really really bad.”

The Red Devils are back in action next Saturday when they go away to Brentford.
