Riviere: I shot for first United goal!

Manchester United Women defender Jayde Riviere cut a figure of pride after scoring her first goal for the club that she grew up supporting, in Sunday’s five-goal triumph over London City Lionesses.
The full-back was making her 50th appearance as a Red and celebrated her landmark day in style, by rifling home our second goal of five in a 5-1 win at the Copperjax Community Stadium.
Riviere’s strike was emphatic, lashing into the roof of the net, having been struck from a tight angle on the right flank. But did our no.14 mean it, or was she crossing the ball?
She answered that question while speaking to Sky Sports post-match, stood next to Melvine Malard…
“I will always be honest! If I had an intention of crossing, I would straight up say it,” Jayde began. “She [Malard] even asked me on the way here [to the post-match interview].
“I personally just thought I would shoot. She actually encourages me a lot in training to shoot when I’m in the box.
“I saw the goalie cheat off her line so I said: ‘Why not?’ I guess I got the benefit on this day.”
Riviere also explained the importance of United bouncing back from Thursday’s first-leg defeat to Brann in Champions League qualifying, just three days after the midweek encounter in Norway.
Despite the quick turnaround, the defender says you could see the “Manchester United identity” in a confident attacking performance, that is sure to get momentum rolling again ahead of the huge European second leg on Thursday.
“We really wanted to focus this week on bouncing back from our Champions League game. We were really disappointed and wanted to really jump into this.
“The team we played was a new team, so it’s very interesting the players that they have and we didn’t know what to expect, but I think for us all we can control is how we can play.
“You saw that ruthlessness of the Manchester United identity. You’ve got Melvine scoring braces, Jess [Park] scoring her first goal and myself scoring a goal for once!
“So, it was a really good performance. A team performance.”
