Manchester United are of the belief they have acquired ‘one of the best’ young shot-stoppers in world football.
On deadline day last Monday, the Red Devils completed the signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in an £18.2 million deal.
The 23-year-old oversaw a hectic day in the aftermath of United’s bid being accepted, which resulted in him being thrown onto a flight to Manchester to swiftly undergo his medical and put pen to paper on a five-year deal.
Having been left out of Belgium’s squad for their World Cup qualifiers over the break, Lammens has been able to stay at Carrington, familiarising himself with his new surroundings and training ahead of his maiden outing for the club.
Whether that’ll come this Sunday in the first Manchester derby of the season remains to be seen, as it’d certainly be nothing short of a baptism of fire for any young player making the switch to the Premier League.
How Senne Lammens’ Old Trafford switch came to fruition
After Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana failed to impress in the opening fixtures of the term, United put an immediate plan into action to target a new ‘keeper in the dying embers of the summer window.
They went as far as agreeing personal terms with Emiliano Martinez, who was keen to make the move to Old Trafford – so much so that he reportedly was in regular contact with compatriot Lisandro Martinez to check on United’s stance.
Yet, the board ultimately opted against progressing with 33-year-old Martinez, instead favouring the more youthful option in the form of Lammens.
The Argentine veteran consequently stayed put at Villa Park while Lammens said his goodbyes to his Antwerp teammates and club staff.
United have full faith in young Lammens
“I think Manchester United really trust him (Lammens) for the present and also for the future. They believe that this is one of the best young goalkeepers in the world,” Fabrizio Romano told GiveMeSport.
“They wanted Lammens strongly and they decided to go for him because they believe he’s the solution for the present and future, and I’m sure that Lammens has very good chances to be the starting goalkeeper at Manchester United.”
