Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has expressed a major concern regarding new signing Senne Lammens.
Lammens signs for United
On deadline day, United confirmed the arrival of Lammens, who completed a move from Royal Antwerp in a deal worth around £18.2m.
United made the decision to sign a goalkeeper after difficult starts to the season for both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana.
Onana is on the brink of sealing a loan switch to Turkish outfit Trabzonspor, where he will spend the 2025/26 campaign. This likely means that Lammens will battle Bayindir for a starting berth.
A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Ruben Amorim is prepared to start Lammens during this weekend’s Manchester derby at the Etihad.
The Belgian is under immediate pressure to deliver, but Foster, who knows the weight of expectation at United, has suggested Lammens is in an impossible position and would need a miracle to be the solution.
Foster makes claim about Lammens
Speaking on his The Cycling Goalkeeper podcast, Foster remarked, “Man City had Ederson, they’ve got Ortega who is a good stand-in, James Trafford who is a Premier League goalkeeper and Gigi Donnarumma, who is a world-class goalkeeper.”
“That’s the level if you want to be competing. Look at Liverpool with Alisson, Mama and they had Kelleher.”
“Manchester United is the hardest club to play for in the world, especially in that goalkeeping position. It’s harder than for anyone else.”
“They’ve got a kid now from the Belgian league, never played for the Belgium first team. They’re expecting this guy to be able to adapt not only to the Premier League but to Manchester United as well. You’re asking for an absolute miracle for this to work.”
Foster continued, “It reeks of sticking a Band-Aid on it really because Bayindir isn’t the answer. This kid, and I call him that at 23 because he is a kid in goalkeeper terms really. It’s asking an awful lot.”
Foster noted that Tom Heaton will probably be thinking that he has a chance to become United’s first-choice goalkeeper.
