‘On Thursday…’: Romano confirms unexpected Man United deal will be finalised midweek

Andre Onana will travel to Turkey on Thursday to undergo his medical with Trabzonspor before putting pen to paper on his temporary contract.

Indeed, the Manchester United goalkeeper will head straight to his new club this week after representing his native Cameroon on international duty over the break, though he’ll likely want to bid farewell to his teammates before he jets off to embark on his venture.

How INEOS U-turned on Andre Onana’s future

Throughout the European transfer window, United had maintained that they would not sanction a goalkeeper’s arrival unless Onana was sold beforehand on a permanent deal.

Then, after seeing both the 29-year-old and Altay Bayindir endure turbulent starts to the campaign, INEOS decided to U-turn on their initial plans and enter the market for a new shot-stopper, eventually securing one in the form of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on a five-year deal.

It’s thought Ruben Amorim then pushed for Onana to be offloaded, whether that be on loan or a sale, to ease the pressure on Lammens whilst also reducing his goalkeeping contingent; Tom Heaton, 39, extended his stay at Old Trafford by 12 months at the end of last season, but hasn’t featured for the side competitively since February 2023.

United swiftly accepted the loan proposal from Trabzonspor but couldn’t progress with the deal until Onana had approved the move, which he did on Sunday.

There is no buy option or obligation included in the terms, so he will return to Old Trafford next summer.

“Andre Onana’s travel to Turkey for Trabzonspor loan move will take place on Thursday,” said Fabrizio Romano on X/Twitter this morning. “Medical already booked.”

The former Inter Milan and Ajax man is contracted to United until 2028.
