Manchester United have signed off on Andre Onana’s departure to Trabzonspor on a season-long loan.

Major developments over the weekend saw the Red Devils accept a proposal from Trabzonspor to take Onana off their hands for the campaign.

United instantly green-lit his exit, leaving the ball in the goalkeeper’s court as to whether he would make the switch or stay at Old Trafford whilst accepting that he would be playing a heavily reduced role for the coming months.

It seems as though Onana has indeed opted for the former, as Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Sunday that negotiations between the clubs were ‘advancing well and fast’ amid a growing ‘confidence’ that the player approves the move.

The reporter subsequently gave it the ‘here we go’ treatment, verifying an agreement was in place between all parties.

All contracts are now signed on player side, waiting on counter approval from Trabzonspor and travel next week.

Throughout the summer, United maintained that a new shot-stopper would not be signed unless Onana was sold. However, they never took any significant steps to facilitate his departure, despite approaches being made from AS Monaco and Saudi Arabian teams.

Then, when both the Cameroonian and Ruben Amorim’s new first-choice ‘keeper Altay Bayindir endured lacklustre starts to 2025/2026, INEOS swiftly acted on the market by signing Senne Lammens, 23, from Royal Antwerp on deadline day last Monday.

He is poised to leapfrog both Onana and Bayindir in the pecking order to become the Reds’ No.1, with the latter likely to be utilised in the FA Cup.

Amorim had already made it clear on numerous occasions towards the end of last term that he wanted to demote Onana; the 29-year-old was omitted from the matchday squads entirely for four of the last seven Premier League matches of 2024/2025.
