Manchester United have endured a difficult start to the new season, despite significantly upgrading the squad over the summer. INEOS spent millions on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko in a bid to improve the attack.
However, following just one win in the first four games, including a humiliating EFL Cup defeat to minnows Grimsby Town, fingers are being pointed at Ruben Amorim again.
The Portuguese head coach took over the reins at Old Trafford in November last year as one of the most exciting young managers in the world.
Amorim had achieved great success with Sporting, and was tasked with reviving the fallen Premier League giants.
However, the campaign ended in a disaster, with the Red Devils finishing 15th in the league, and also losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. While United have kept their trust in the Portuguese so far, a recent development could give an interesting angle to their head coach’s future.
Oliver Glasner has done a commendable job at Crystal Palace
Oliver Glasner’s time at Crystal Palace has been a stark contrast to Amorim’s woes at Old Trafford. The Austrian manager has transformed the Eagles’ fortunes since taking charge in February 2024.
Glasner won the FA Cup last season by defeating Manchester City in the final. His team got the better of City once again at the start of this campaign in the Community Shield.
Recent reports have suggested that United have the Austrian on their list of possible replacements for Amorim. Glasner’s contract, interestingly, is set to expire at the end of this season.
Glasner reportedly threatened to walk away from Selhurst Park if Marc Guehi was sold to Liverpool on transfer deadline day. The deal ultimately failed to materialise, but the situation at the London club remains tense.
Palace are concerned about Glasner’s future
According to journalist Peter O’Rourke, Crystal Palace are worried that they could lose their manager next year.
Speaking on the Football Insider platform, O’Rourke added that Glasner is firmly in control of his future.
“Glasner himself knows that he’s in a strong position. Things have gotten a bit tense behind the scenes, there’s no getting away from that. He’s in the final year of his contract, so he hold the power in terms of his long-term future,” said O’Rourke.
“I’m sure there’ll be other clubs in the Premier League and across Europe who will be keeping tabs on the situation as well.”
“So for Palace, it might not only be a case of worrying about losing their best players, they might be set to lose their manager at some point in the future too. Glasner is in control of his own destiny now with his contract running down.”
United are likely to keep a close eye on Glasner’s situation as they wait for Amorim to turn things around at Old Trafford.
