‘Where’s the ambition?’: Ten Hag signing warned he’s making an ‘incomprehensible’ decision over his future

Upon the culmination of the 2024/2025 campaign, Manchester United bid farewell to Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof, whose contracts expired in June.

Of the departing trio, only one former Red has gone on to find a new club in the form of Lindelof signing for Aston Villa on deadline day.

Evans, 37, decided to hang up his boots entirely after an illustrious and decorated career – primarily with United and Leicester City – leaving 33-year-old Eriksen as the last remaining player mulling over his future.

The Dane had been linked with a host of suitors in the months leading up to his Red Devils release – even one of Eriksen’s former clubs, Ajax, admitted back in March they were considering re-adding him to their ranks and bringing him back to the place he kick-started his footballing career.

Yet, it’s now a month into the 2025/2026 campaign and the midfield veteran has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal with any side, although he has been keeping up his fitness levels with Swedish league champions Malmö by training with their squad.

Nothing has indicated Eriksen will join the side permanently, and even if he wanted to, it’d take some work behind the scenes for Malmö to register him, given the Allsvenskan registration window closed on August 31.

Thomas Gravesen sends fiery warning Eriksen’s way

He’s also been urged against doing so by former Everton star and compatriot Thomas Gravesen, who said of the situation (via Fotboll Skanalen): “It is incomprehensible to me that he chooses Malmö.

“It is not a club that he can go to because he cannot sign a contract with them and we have some clubs in Denmark that are much, much better than Malmö. This looks like a friendly thing, where Christian Eriksen is over and having fun with some friends. Where is the ambition to play football?

“We talk about him being without a club for three months, but he has been without a club since January because he has been able to sign a contract with a new club ever since. He has been dragging his feet on it for a long time. If he wants to play for the national team, what signal does this send?

“What signal does going up and having fun with friends in Malmo send? I don’t understand it! It seems frivolous in some way. If he had ambitions, he would have gone to a higher-level club. For me, it is not ambitious enough to go to Malmö and have fun. Who sees him there?”
