Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov, Nani and more Manchester United legends rolled back the years as they took on their Celtic counterparts to support both clubs’ charitable work in their communities.

The Celtic Park clash, finishing in a 2-2 draw and a home success via spot-kicks, followed on from the two sides meeting at Old Trafford almost exactly one year prior, when Celtic prevailed via penalties after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

On that occasion, more than 33,000 supporters watched on in M16 as over £1 million was raised for Manchester United Foundation’s community work to support young people, which takes place across all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester and other outreach areas in the United Kingdom.

This time, all funds raised from the fixture are going towards Celtic Foundation, which will primarily be used for the continuation and development of its Paradise Pit Stop project. This project helps to provide free warm meals and a selection of hot and soft drinks, four days a week, in a safe, non-judgmental and welcoming environment for individuals and families.

John Shiels, chief executive of Manchester United Foundation, said: “Welcoming back Manchester United greats from all around the world to play in this game has been truly special. We’re thankful for the ongoing support of every player who featured today and in last year’s game at Old Trafford in order to support both clubs’ Foundations.

“These games are so important to raise the funds needed to support young people who need it most, and serve as a poignant reminder of how vital the work each club’s Foundation is in its communities. The work that Celtic Foundation does in Glasgow and the surrounding areas is fantastic and we’re proud to support that today.

“Seeing the Manchester United fans travel here to Celtic Park to back the team, and coming out in numbers for the Old Trafford leg last year, has been a joy. Having the support of these magnificent fans is invaluable in everything we do.”

Darren Fletcher and Dimitar Berbatov scored for the Reds.

Darren Fletcher and Dimitar Berbatov had scored in the first half for United, before Celtic responded through Scott McDonald and Shaun Maloney, and then won the tie on penalties.

Bryan Robson took on the managerial reins for the Reds, continuing his long-standing support of Manchester United Foundation and regular presence on the touchline for legends matches played in aid of the charity down the years. He was able to call on 2008 Champions League winner Nani for his first Legends appearance at Celtic, while another former Old Trafford favourite, Brian McClair, formed part of the Bhoys’ management team, having also supported the United cause for these games previously.

This was Nani’s first appearance in a legends match, having only retired last year.

Robson said: “The fans were great, everybody was here to have a good time, and thankfully because of the support from the fans, I’m sure the Celtic Foundation will be really pleased and I know Manchester United Foundation will be too.”

Following his first appearance for United Legends, Nani said: “It’s a good experience and really nice to get back and see some old friends, To wear this shirt again was amazing. The fans are part of our family and when we are on the field they push us up and we always need to give something back. It means a lot to us.

“We need to take care of our community and if we have the possibility to help others do the same for their communities, it’s great. What Manchester United Foundation is doing is amazing and that’s why we are one of the best clubs in the world.”
