Ex-United star takes significant step in quest to land new team after being released in the summer – report

Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has reportedly made a decisive move as his search for a new team continues.

Eriksen remains a free agent

Eriksen is still a free agent since parting ways with United earlier in the summer. United released Eriksen upon the expiry of his contract.

He joined United on a free transfer from Brentford in the summer of 2022.

The Dane went on to make 107 appearances for the club, scoring eight times during that period. Eriksen helped United win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

His exit was confirmed on the final day of the 2024/25 season, as he departed alongside Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof.

Evans has since been named head of loans and pathways at United, while Lindelof sealed a move to Aston Villa. However, Eriksen has not been so lucky.

Despite interest from Wrexham, Burnley and Besiktas, Eriksen remains without a club, though he is still eligible to join a European side as a free agent following the closure of the summer window.

Now, it has emerged that the 33-year-old is currently training with Swedish side Malmo to maintain his fitness.

Eriksen training with European club

talkSPORT have published pictures of Eriksen in training with the Malmo squad.

The news outlet points out, “It is unclear whether the midfielder could earn a contract with the Swedish club but his hopes of playing in Europe appear all but diminished.”

“Malmo submitted their squad for this season’s Europa League league phase earlier this week meaning if he did sign for the club then he would not be able to feature in the competition until the knockout rounds in early 2026.”

It’s understood that this suggests that Malmo are unlikely to offer Eriksen a contract.

Eriksen’s uncertain situation saw him left out of Denmark’s squad for the ongoing September international break.
