United “closely monitoring” ex-PSG midfielder, his “unexpected” January arrival would add balance to Amorim’s side – report

Manchester United ended the summer transfer window without strengthening their midfield.

Following a frustrating last campaign, United weighed whether to prioritise signing a new striker or a midfielder. As per The Athletic, Jason Wilcox advocated to sign a goalscorer.

As such, United transformed their attack and left their midfield issues unaddressed. However, the Red Devils continue to monitor a number of midfielders and may make an attempt to strengthen the position in the near future.

Manchester United interested in Marco Verratti

According to Fichajes, United are “closely monitoring” Marco Verratti.

The 32-year-old Italian is plying his trade in Qatar after spending nearly a decade in the middle of the park at Paris Saint-Germain. The ex-PSG star has joined Al-Duhail this summer after two encouraging seasons with Al-Arabi.

It is claimed that Verratti “remains a respected name” in world football, as he is still capable of shining at the highest level due to his technical ability.

During his peak years in the French capital, Verratti drew comparisons to Andres Iniesta because of his impressive tendency to evade pressing opponents.

It is understood United believe his “unexpected” signing in the January transfer window could add balance to their squad. Amorim possesses a number of midfielders capable of running and winning possession, but no one manages to dictate the tempo with a reliable consistency.

However, considering Verratti’s age and Ineos’ policy of targeting up and coming talents, it is best to take the claim with a pinch of salt.

United tried to replace Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo has earned plaudits for his composure with the ball at his feet. Still, the England international has struggled to earn regular starts under Amorim, as the Portuguese tactician remains unconvinced with his defensive work.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Amorim wanted to replace Mainoo with Conor Gallagher of Atletico Madrid.

However, Madrid refused to entertain loan proposals for the ex-Chelsea man, and United ultimately decided to keep Mainoo at the club beyond Monday’s transfer deadline.
