Benjamin Sesko has revealed he is only getting “better and faster” in training as Manchester United’s frontman continues to settle into life at Old Trafford.
A disrupted pre-season
Sesko, 22, completed a blockbuster £74 million switch to the Red Devils in early August after weeks of intense negotiations with RB Leipzig.
Newcastle were also in the hunt for the Slovenia international, even offering a better deal than their Old Trafford counterparts, but ultimately he opted to accept United’s proposal.
Sesko put pen to paper on a five-year contract at United and was presented to fans before the club’s final pre-season match against Fiorentina.
However, the nature of a summer transfer saga means the player at the heart of the move rarely enjoys an optimal pre-season themselves, often arriving at their new club without the requisite preparation for the new campaign.
In Sesko’s case, he was at a good level physically, but lacking the match-fitness and sharpness which a consistent run of matches over the summer provides.
The striker has been included on the bench for all three of United’s opening Premier League fixtures, starting only in the Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby Town, where he played all 90 minutes as Ruben Amorim’s side crashed out in humiliating fashion on penalties.
Sesko was the last outfield player to take a spot kick due to the Slovenian experiencing cramps at the full-time whistle, demonstrating the importance of a proper pre-season.
“Better and faster”
Sesko jetted off on international duty on Monday with Slovenia set to face crucial World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Sweden.
Speaking to local media outlet Ekipa (as relayed by Sports Witness), the 22-year-old opened up on his early experiences in England.
“The level of the matches is certainly much higher, the players and teammates are also at a higher level. After all, English football is at the highest level in the world of football,” Sesko explained.
“But I am very much looking forward to the coming period, also because I am getting better and faster in every training session, and I am also progressing in my football mentality every day.”
The former Leipzig star further revealed he has always “wanted to move to England and fortunately my wish came true.”
He concluded that the upcoming derby with Manchester City at the Etihad next weekend is an “incredibly big match” for the Red Devils.
“It’s true, it’s an incredibly big match coming up. There will simply be some pressure on both sides to just win this match. There’s still quite a bit to go until this match, but we’re definitely looking forward to a top-notch match.”
