7 passes in 90 mins, 83% duels lost, 1 big chance missed: Cold, hard dose of reality strikes United’s shiny new toy

Manchester United crashed out of the EFL Cup in the second round after a humiliating 11-12 penalty loss to League Two side Grimsby Town after the game ended 2-2 at the end of regulation time.

The home side were by far the better team, and they rightly took a two-goal lead into the break after Andre Onana was at fault yet again. How he continues to be at the club remains a mystery.

The players did manage to score twice in the second 45 minutes through Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire to take the game to penalties, but the shootout was equally embarrassing.

The goalkeeper got his hands on several shots, but managed to save only a single one. And their new No.9, signed for an initial £66 million, was the last outfield player to step up.

Sesko looked unsure of himself

After two disappointing seasons for Rasmus Hojlund, fans were elated to see the club sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. Expectations were sky-high and rightfully so, given his impressive stats for his last two clubs.

But the English game is a different beast, and while he did look raw in both of his Premier League cameos, the real test was his first start in red.

Safe to say, it did not go according to plan. In 90 minutes, he managed a meagre seven passes, ended the game with a pass completion rate of only 64 percent.

This is not the Bundesliga

He had six shots, with only two on target. Both were comfortable saves. His last-minute miss from almost below the crossbar was hard to digest.

The Slovenian managed 0 key passes, 0 crosses, 0 long balls, and looked off the pace for the entire duration of the game (all stats via sofascore).

He lost 10 duels out of 12, and lost the ball nine times. The 22-year-old got quite the reality check at Blundell Park — this is not the Bundesliga where you can dominate defenders.

The League Two side’s centre-halves had it easy against Benjamin Sesko, and that will be a concern moving forward. Amorim must try and restore his confidence after the beating it got in the rain.

He needs time to adapt, but looking just as clueless as his predecessor is not the best look.
