Manchester United’s Carabao Cup campaign begins with a rare trip to Grimsby Town on Wednesday 27 August (20:00 BST).

We kick off our journey towards a seventh tournament victory in our history – our most recent was in 2023 – at Blundell Park in the second round.

It will be our first meeting with the Mariners since 1948, with a place in the third round at stake.

Keep scrolling for broadcast information, team news and much more…

HOW TO WATCH GRIMSBY V UNITED

The Reds aim for a first victory of the season, after unfortunate Premier League results at home to Arsenal and in the capital at Fulham.

Join us on MUTV, the United App and ManUtd.com for exclusive pre-match build-up, interviews and analysis from 18:55.

The match will then be broadcast simultaneously in the UK on ITV and Sky Sports.

Stay tuned across our platforms for live commentary, in-game updates, stats, interactive content and much, much more.

TEAM NEWS

United were without Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez in our Sunday draw at Fulham, with the latter’s rehabilitation from a knee injury still progressing. A further update on Mazraoui may be forthcoming in Ruben Amorim’s pre-match press conference, which will be broadcast at 13:30 BST on Tuesday.

There will also be keen eyes on the situations of new signing Benjamin Sesko, who has twice been used as a substitute, and goalkeeper Andre Onana, who returned from injury to take a place on the bench against Fulham. The head coach could provide further information on that duo in his media duties this week.

Hosts Grimsby head into the game with a clean bill of health, but more information could be provided by head coach David Artell before the game.

OPPOSITION FORM

The Mariners enter the midweek clash on the back of a strong start to the season, still unbeaten in all competitions this term.

That includes their first-round win against Shrewsbury Town at Blundell Park in this competition, brushing their division rivals aside in a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Justin Amaluzor, Cameron Gardner and Jaze Kabia.

Kabia was on the scoresheet once more in Grimsby’s last outing, a 1-1 draw against Accrington Stanley in League Two, one of two draws recorded this season, alongside an impressive four wins.

The Reds will, of course, enter the match the favourites on Wednesday night, but we’ll meet a side with plenty of momentum behind them.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

It would be an understatement to say that meetings between the Reds and Grimsby are rare, with the last such encounter having occurred over 75 years ago in March 1948.

That was the last of just 37 games played against each other in the two clubs’ histories, stretching back to the first match between the sides in 1894, when we were still known as Newton Heath.

In head-to-head terms, our record is almost equal, with 16 wins for United, 15 wins for Grimsby and six draws. Our last meeting, in 1948, ended 1-1.

That record will have little bearing on the modern day instalment of the fixture, but it’s certainly one the Reds will be looking to extend in our favour, all while savouring a rare meeting and a new ground for many.
