Manchester United are going all in for Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens, leaving fans wondering about Andre Onana and his future at the club.
The Cameroonian custodian has been plying his trade at Old Trafford since making the move from Inter Milan in July 2023. However, he hasn’t been able to justify his £47.5 million price tag, as he developped a knack for committing costly blunders.
Retired Italian goalkeeper Antonio Fontana labelled Onana as ‘unpopular’ among his teammates due to his showboating and limelight-hugging style. Nevertheless, he was an undisputed starter between the sticks over the past two years.
Man United keen to add Senne Lammens to the squad
This summer, the 29-year-old has been suffering from an injury, which saw him miss out on the club’s pre-season friendlies. And whilst he has clinically recovered ahead of the Premier League kickoff, Ruben Amorim decided to stick by Altay Bayindir, even if he hasn’t been entirely convincing.
Nevertheless, Man Utd realised the dire need for reinforcement, so the management accelerated its attempts to sign Lammens, with several sources claiming that the negotiations are at an advanced stage.
During his appearance on the Talk of the Devil podcast, The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell revealed that everyone at United, from Amorim to INEOS executives, realised that the goalkeeping department should be addressed.

Andre Onana set to stay despite Lammens’ potential arrival at Man Utd
As the Man Utd insider explains, the original plan was to sign a new shot-stopper only if Onana is sold. However, the club has now changed its stance after realising that offloading the Cameroonian won’t be an easy mission, and that the department requires a new addition.
Therefore, MUFC identified Lammens as a low-cost operation that wouldn’t upset the balance.
Moreover, Whitwell believes the arrival of the Belgian could push Onana to raise his level, as he’ll have a genuine competitor for a starting berth.
In the meantime, Bayindir’s future remains up in the air, but one would imagine that the Turk would seek an exit, as he wouldn’t want to be lost in the shuffle, especially with a World Cup to be played next summer.
