Free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin has reportedly made a daring move in his efforts to secure a transfer to Manchester United.
Calvert-Lewin on United’s radar
Calvert-Lewin parted ways with Everton at the end of June following the expiry of his contract.
His future has since been the subject of intense speculation, with United named as an interested party in the England international.
A report covered by The Peoples Person last month relayed that United were emerging as “serious suitors” for Calvert-Lewin.
It was further stated that the forward wants as much as £100,000 per week to give the green light to join United. This is a sum that Ruben Amorim’s side would almost certainly consider prohibitive, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe works to fix the club’s wage structure.
Additionally, with United completing the signing of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, it’s unclear where this development leaves a potential swoop for Calvert-Lewin.
On Saturday, United presented Sesko to the Old Trafford faithful ahead of their pre-season showdown with Fiorentina. Amorim praised the acquisition of Sesko as he highlighted just why the Slovenian will succeed at the club.
However, with Rasmus Hojlund increasingly looking to be on his way out of United, amidst advances from AC Milan, United could potentially sign another striker to provide cover for Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee. Calvert-Lewin is an appealing option because of his free agent status.
According to The Sun, Calvert-Lewin has his heart set on a move to United and has taken a drastic step to get a transfer over the line.
Calvert-Lewin’s big gamble to secure United switch
The Sun reveal, “Former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin will do his own transfer negotiations as he looks for a new club.”
“The free agent, 28, has ditched his representative and is hoping for a deal at Manchester United.”
The newspaper note that United aren’t the only Premier League club eyeing Calvert-Lewin. Newcastle are also lurking while Aston Villa are considering him as a back-up to Ollie Watkins.
Newcomers Sunderland are also believed to be keen on adding him to their ranks.
