Manchester United have not made a definitive decision on Andre Onana’s future amidst their ongoing quest to find a new goalkeeper.
At this stage, United fans are well aware it’s not set in stone that the club will be signing a new No.1. However, if their moves for a striker and midfielder are wrapped up relatively swiftly in the coming weeks, there may be time to turn their attention to the position.
INEOS even went as far as testing one side’s resolve for their first-choice ‘keeper target just over a week ago when trying to sign Emiliano Martinez on loan from Aston Villa.
United fail in first attempt to land Villa’s Martinez
Villa were, understandably, uninterested in doing such a deal. Their vice-captain is tied down to his current contract until 2029, and a replacement would absolutely be necessary before the new season gets underway.
They value Martinez in the region of £40 million, which has led to United putting their interest on the back burner – for now, at least.
As for the player himself, Fabrizio Romano revealed last month that veteran Martinez was essentially waiting on a call from the Red Devils, having been tempted by the prospect of representing the 20-time champions after a stellar five years at Villa Park.
Where does Onana stand if a new No.1 is signed?
In the event United did fork out such a high fee for the 32-year-old, Andre Onana would have to be sold – and he’d also likely push for an exit, given he’d have no intention of playing second fiddle to the World Cup winner.
There would potentially be options available for him, too, as MailSport claims the Cameroonian, whom the board paid £47m for back in 2023, has at least two concrete suitors this summer in the form of Monaco and Saudi Pro League outfit FC Neom.
Chris Wheeler adds that Onana’s situation may continue until the very final stages of the transfer window.
