“He called me and he said…”: United star addresses national team return hopes after private chat with manager

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has broken his silence on the possibility of returning to the England national team following a private chat with Thomas Tuchel.

Mount’s decline with England

During his Chelsea days, Mount was a key player for the Three Lions under Gareth Southgate.

He played a key role in the England team that reached the final of Euro 2020. The United star was also part of the 2022 World Cup squad.

But Mount has not turned out for England since the quarter-final World Cup defeat to France in December 2022. He won a late penalty, which Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane failed to convert.

Mount’s absence from the international stage has largely been down to injuries and fitness struggles but his form since arriving at Old Trafford certainly hasn’t helped his situation either.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Mount faces a pivotal season at United. Securing a regular starting spot and delivering strong performances would greatly boost his chances of a call-up. An underwhelming campaign could harm his hopes.

Mount reveals details of private call with Tuchel

Mount has revealed that England boss Thomas Tuchel called him and a potential return to the national team was discussed.

The pair of course know each other very well from their successful time together at Chelsea.

The United number 7 said [as quoted by Daily Mail], “He called me and he said that he’s calling a lot of players and just wanted to catch up. I don’t know how many players he probably called, 40 or 50 maybe. But it was good to see his face, good to catch up with him and good to speak to him.”

“I played quite a bit under him. We won the Champions League, so that’s a positive. But I think with England it’s totally different now; the competition for places, the amount of people he can pick, it’s a bit different than club football. So I don’t think it goes hand in hand.”

“He said to me, ‘there’s no guarantees, even though you played for me’. But it gives you more. You want to push even more to be able to be back in the squad. So it was really good to speak to him and see what he’s preparing.”

“He looked very excited and had loads of energy, like I remember, and was bang up for the new role.”

Mount continued, “Of course, as a player, you always want to play for your country and that’s such a big honour. Any opportunity that you get to put that shirt on is amazing. I have 36 appearances for England, so I know what it means to be able to play for your country.”

“I’d love to have that opportunity again but I’m focusing on club football first. So I’m looking at that first for sure and see what happens at the end of the season.”

Mount and United are back in action in the early hours of Thursday morning when they take on Bournemouth in Chicago.
