41 touches, 38 accurate passes, one key pass: exciting United talent really looked the part vs West Ham

Kobbie Mainoo, starting alongside Manuel Ugarte in Manchester United’s midfield pivot for their opening clash with West Ham, was a bold statement.

Ahead of the fixture, which kicked off United’s Premier League summer series, head coach Ruben Amorim had already hinted he had big plans for Mainoo.

The 2024–25 campaign was not kind to the United Academy graduate.

Injuries held him back, and even when available, he was not trusted with a deeper midfield role, even though he had impressed there under Erik ten Hag.

Yet Amorim suggested that while Mainoo’s quality is undeniable, there is room for him to raise his rhythm and intensity to suit the demands of his position (in deep midfield) better.

Mainoo vs West Ham

At the Met Life Stadium against Premier League opposition, Mainoo looked eager to take on Amorim’s challenge.

In the 66 minutes he clocked, he delivered a promising performance.

There were flashes of his 2023–24 brilliance: 41 touches, 38 accurate passes (92.7%), one key pass, one tackle, one interception and an assist for Bruno Fernandes’ 52nd-minute goal.

Against West Ham, it was refreshing to see Mainoo keep the ball and dictate play.

He was among United’s top performers on the day.

Partnership with Ugarte

The midfield had looked vulnerable in the goalless friendly against Leeds.

Big gaps were left to exploit, and the Casemiro–Fernandes pairing raised concerns among fans.

Against West Ham, though, the Mainoo–Manuel Ugarte double pivot gave supporters genuine hope.

Mainoo offered glimpses of his ability to dictate tempo and apply pressure at key moments. Ugarte, defensively solid, also took on more progressive actions (an aspect of his game he has rarely shown in a United shirt).

If United fail to land another midfielder this window, the Ugarte–Mainoo pairing may yet lay the foundation for a dominant pivot.

A steady win

United were decent in their 2–1 win over West Ham.

It is the kind of performance fans sorely needed after a disastrous league campaign, one where they lost both home and away to the Hammers.

There is still plenty to improve, but Amorim and his team have something to build on.
