“A lot needs to change”: Ex-United boss Jose Mourinho fires brutal dig at Ratcliffe

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has fired a brutal verdict on co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe after the club endured the worst season in their modern history.

United’s struggles under Ruben Amorim

United sacked Erik ten Hag at the end of October after a string of uninspiring performances and results. He was replaced by Ruben Amorim, whom United lured away from Sporting CP mid-season.

It was hoped that Amorim would inspire a drastic improvement but he never did. In fact, it can be argued that things got much worse.

United ended the 2024/25 campaign in 15th place in the Premier League, having suffered a humiliating 18 losses. Nine of these came at home.

The Red Devils finished with a -10 goal difference and also suffered a painful 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, which saw them miss out on Champions League qualification.

The expectation was that United would have a busy transfer window but it’s been mostly sluggish so far, with only the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to show for it.

United’s plans have been thwarted by their inability to offload unwanted players.

Now, Mourinho has weighed in on the situation and it appears he feels Ratcliffe and INEOS should shoulder most of the blame for the club’s woes.

Mourinho’s remarks

Speaking to Portuguese news outlet Record, Mourinho explained, “Today, I think that with the change in ownership at the club, with an owner who doesn’t have much experience in football but rather in sport…”

“What happened to Ruben, from being the manager of the worst Manchester United in Premier League history to having continuity and confidence to continue and be Ruben Amorim, is a sign that a lot needs to change.”

However, Mourinho argued that Amorim has what it takes to turn things around at Old Trafford.

“With that stability… We all agree that he’s a manager with great potential and personality.”

“I think he has incredible potential to do great work.”

Mourinho, now boss of Turkish outfit Fenerbahce, led United to two major trophies – the Carabao Cup and the Europa League.
