Rival PL club hold “fresh talks” to hijack United’s deal for seasoned striker up for grabs at no cost – report

Newcastle have reportedly held talks with Dominic Calvert-Lewin in an effort to beat suitors like Manchester United to his signature.

United are in the market for a new striker, but their search has proved challenging so far this window. First-choice target Liam Delap opted for a move to Chelsea instead, while Sporting CP talisman Viktor Gyokeres appears to be on the brink of joining Arsenal.

Other targets such as Victor Osimhen, Ollie Watkins and Benjamin Sesko either carry hefty price tags or are asking for excessive wages.

United interested in Calvert-Lewin

It’s for these types of reasons that Calvert-Lewin has popped up on United’s radar. He is available as a free agent following his decision to part ways with Everton after nine years at the club, having signed for them from Sheffield United.

He scored 71 goals and provided an additional 22 assists during his time with the Toffees. A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United had made a shock move to lure Calvert-Lewin to Old Trafford, reaching out to his agents to explore the possibility of getting a deal over the line.

Now, an update has been provided and it appears the Red Devils are not alone in their admiration for the England international.

Newcastle have held talks with Calvert-Lewin

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle have “held fresh talks” with Calvert-Lewin, with Eddie Howe a “long-term admirer” of the player.

The Magpies attempted to sign Calvert-Lewin last year but walked away due to Everton’s high asking price. Now that he’s available on a free, a transfer looks firmly on the cards.

Should he complete a switch to St James’ Park, the 28-year-old would deputise for Alexander Isak and provide competition up front.

Newly-promoted Leeds United had also looked into signing Calvert-Lewin, but they’re no longer thought to be in contention due to their inability to meet his wage demands.

Calvert-Lewin scored three goals and provided just one assist in 26 Premier League appearances last term. He missed many games due to injuries.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle’s advances will push United to intensify their efforts for Calvert-Lewin. It’s also uncertain if Ruben Amorim’s side currently view him as their primary striker target or merely a back-up option for a more prolific signing.
