United’s pursuit of long-term target under threat as Barcelona are “seriously interested” in CL star – report

Denzel Dumfries

Manchester United’s long term target Denzel Dumfries is being keenly pursued by FC Barcelona.

The Red Devils have tracked Dumfries from the days of Erik ten Hag’s time as manager.

Former United captain Gary Neville has already urged Ruben Amorim to sign the attacking wing back after his fine performance versus Barcelona in the Champions League.

Interestingly, it has been reported that the Dutch defender has a €30 million release clause if paid before the middle of July.

What’s more, he has also recently changed agents ahead of a potential summer move.

Catalan paper Sport report that United will face stiff competition from Spain if they want to wrap up a deal for Dumfries.

It is stated that “Barça are serious about signing Dumfries. In Italy, reports indicate that Inter are already exploring a player as a replacement for their right-back position.”

Super-agent Jorge Mendes has allegedly already offered the player to the Blaugrana and his low release clause is viewed by the decision makers at the Camp Nou as a “market opportunity”.

The key to the deal is Dumfries’ move to Mendes’ agency, as the Portuguese is “pushing” for a switch to Spain.

The paper claims that the “Dumfries option has been under consideration for some time” but Barcelona have once again been struggling with the ability to register their players ahead of the new league season.

Nonetheless, “Barça’s sporting directors have confirmed their interest to Mendes and that they will make a decision on the matter next week.”

The Catalan giants must act fast though as once the 15th July deadline passes, Dumfries’ price will skyrocket to at least €35 million, which would make the deal “unattainable” for the club.

The Netherlands international is said to be keen on a move to Barcelona and would want to see the deal completed.
