WHAT IS ‘WORLD SEVENS’?

The brand-new competition was held for the first time at the end of May.

It placed eight women’s teams from around the globe against each other in an exciting seven-a-side tournament.

Each match lasted for 30 minutes, divided into two halves of 15 minutes each, with extra time for a tiebreak.

The games were fast-paced and action-packed, with the ‘no offsides’ rule providing a fascinating new dynamic and great entertainment for viewers on DAZN.

United Women were drawn in Group B of the competition alongside Roma, Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica.

It’s fair to say Marc Skinner’s side truly embraced the competition and relished the new format, deservedly progressing as winners from a tough pool.

Using the entire travelling squad across the three-day event, United shone on the continent and memorably defeated local rivals Manchester City in the semi-final, before very narrowly losing to German giants Bayern Munich in a dramatic final.

‘BRING ON NEXT YEAR’

While we couldn’t lift the trophy, World Sevens was without doubt a fantastic experience and our squad came home with memories to last a lifetime.

“All I know from is that the players loved it, they absolutely loved it and it was so enjoyable,” explains Skinner in our film.

“That was the real key for me. I didn’t know what to expect, but if the players came away and enjoyed it, for the season they produced they deserved that moment of just enjoying football and that is something I am very proud of.

“I want us to be in this tournament next year because I think it create a great team spirit and a great team bond.

WHAT MOVES ME | Tooney is now a United star, but she’ll never forget where she came from or her duty as a role model…

“Of all the things that have happened this year, as our club rebuilds itself and we rise again, you’ve got to remember that within the team there is already that key spirit of Manchester United. You can see it in our team. I love that.

“It’s what gets me driven and out of bed every day, to have the fantastic staff we have got, working really hard and pulling in one direction. That for me is the spirit and culture a club should have.”

Watch ‘World Sevens: Game Changers’ from 17:00 BST on Wednesday.
