United launch surprise “offer” for La Liga superstar, club ready to agree £34m deal – report

Manchester United have reportedly made an “offer” for Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo.

During the January transfer window, United handed Ruben Amorim two new defenders. Patrick Dorgu arrived from Leece to play as a wing-back and Ayden Heaven left Arsenal to play as a centre-back in the Portuguese tactician’s back three.

However, the Red Devils still appear light in central defence, having parted ways with both Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof at the end of the season.

As such, even though the club’s hierarchy are prioritising their attack, Amorim would be better off with an additional defender in his ranks. Interestingly, a report suggests United are working on making that happen.

According to reports in Spain, as relayed by the Manchester Evening News, United have launched an “offer” to sign Araujo from Barcelona.

Araujo was handed a new contract only in January and is now tied to the Camp Nou until 2031.

Still, question marks remain over his long term future at the club, owing to his fitness struggles and lack of minutes under Hansi Flick.

The Uruguayan isn’t considered an indispensable figure at Barca and it is understood he could be sacrificed this summer, as the La Liga giants are looking to raise funds to trigger the release clause in Nico Williams’ contract.

It is claimed that Bayern Munich and Juventus have also made an approach for the 26-year-old.

The Blaugrana are reportedly willing to “open the door” to his exit for a fee in the region of £34 million.

Considering Araujo’s recent form, injury issues, and Barcelona’s asking price, it would be best for United to look elsewhere to strengthen their backline.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are interested in AS Roma star Evan Ndicka. The Ivorian was one of Serie A’s best centre-backs during the recently concluded campaign.
