When do United play next?

Monday 23 June 2025 14:36

Manchester United’s pre-season campaign begins on Saturday 19 July, when we take on rivals Leeds United in Sweden’s capital Stockholm.

The Yorkshire club are looking ahead to a Premier League return, having topped the Championship table last term.

They’ll be competing in the top-flight for the first time since 2023, when they were relegated after three seasons back in the big time.

Competitive clashes between the Reds and our foes from across the Pennines are always much anticipated but this will also be a noteworthy date.

The fixture will mark the start of Ruben Amorim’s first full season in charge, while we could also have an opportunity to see new signing Matheus Cunha make his maiden appearance for the Reds.

Here’s everything you need to know about United v Leeds, including how you can watch it live…

HOW TO WATCH LIVE

As usual, MUTV subscribers can watch United’s full pre-season programme live, via the linear TV channel, ManUtd.com or in the United App (please note US customers cannot watch the Premier League Summer Series matches live on MUTV).

Simply sign up now for £29.99 a year, or £7.99 a month, to obtain 24/7 access.

Our meeting with Leeds at the Strawberry Arena kicks off at 14:00 BST and we’ll be on the ground in Stockholm to provide the best pre-match build-up, plus exclusive opinion and analysis.

A GUIDE TO OUR OPPONENTS

Daniel Farke’s men will be brimming with confidence, following a seriously impressive season in the second tier. Leeds lost just once after November and led the Championship for much of the campaign post-Christmas.

Promotion was confirmed with two games to spare, when Burnley beat third-placed Sheffield United 2-1 at Turf Moor. The Clarets pushed Leeds most of the way and nearly nicked the title on the final day.

The Whites looked set to be frustrated as they were being held at relegated Plymouth Argyle, but Manor Solomon’s injury-time winner took them to 100 points – a new club record.

That was the same total Burnley managed, but, crucially, Farke’s free-scoring side had the goal-difference advantage, meaning captain Ethan Ampadu was able to lift the Championship trophy.

ANY SUMMER ADDITIONS?

Former Manchester City forward Lukas Nmecha has joined on a free transfer, four years after departing England for Wolfsburg.

The 26-year-old was the leading scorer when Germany won the Under-21 European Championship in 2021 and he has since made seven appearances for his nation’s senior side.

It’s early days, of course, but Farke looks set to benefit from keeping much of his promotion-winning side together. Josuha Guilavogui has left after making 18 appearances last season, while Joe Rothwell and Solomon have returned to Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, following the completion of their loan spells.

Rasmus Kristensen hadn’t played for Leeds since their relegation in 2023, but he has now joined Eintracht Frankfurt on a permanent basis.

UNITED IN SWEDEN

Our links with the Scandinavian country go back decades, to a Fairs Cup meeting with Djurgarden in 1964. Our other competitive clashes with a Swedish team came 30 years later, when IFK Gothenburg were a Champions League group-stage opponent.

Jesper Blomqvist, an impressive member of that Gothenburg side, became our first Swedish player in 1998 and five of his compatriots have since followed, including national-team captains Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrik Larsson and Victor Lindelof.

Ibrahimovic made his first United appearance when we played Galatasaray in Gothenburg in 2016, four years after we’d faced Barcelona in Sweden’s second city.

The venue for this game – the Strawberry Arena – hosted the Europa League final in 2017, when we beat Ajax 2-0.

UNITED v LEEDS IN PRE-SEASON

This will be the third time we’ve played Leeds in pre-season since 2019, with each meeting coming in a different city.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men were thrashed 4-0 in Perth six years ago, as the Reds ended the tour of Asia and Australia in fine fashion.

Two seasons ago, we opened our summer campaign with a head-to-head against the recently relegated Whites in Oslo.

Erik ten Hag replaced his whole XI at half-time and it was our younger charges who decided the game, as Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill found the net to decide the encounter at Ullevaal Stadion.
