It is now 20 years since Manchester United signed Edwin van der Sar, one of the greatest goalkeepers ever to play for the club.
It is generally acknowledged that the Dutchman should have been a United player much earlier in his lengthy career.
An instant hit at Ajax, he had been a top target for the Reds back in 1999, when Peter Schmeichel decided to leave for sunnier climes, joining Sporting.
Instead, the talented keeper signed for Serie A giants Juventus.

At least a move to Fulham, two years later, brought him closer to Old Trafford and, after competing domestically against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, it was decided that he still, even at 34, had time to show his class at the very highest level once again.
To their credit, Fulham did not deny Edwin his opportunity even though he had only agreed fresh terms in January.
“When Sir Alex phoned me in 1999, I really wanted to join United,” revealed van der Sar. “But it was impossible at the time because I had already committed myself to Juventus. I am delighted to sign for United, one of the most famous clubs in the world.”
United had released Roy Carroll and Ricardo but still considered Tim Howard as a first-choice option. Nonetheless, Ferguson felt £2 million was a steal for the veteran Netherlands international, even if the official figure was always undisclosed, as was to become the norm.
Gianluigi Buffon, Shay Given and Paul Robinson had all been linked with the club in various quarters but there was no doubting van der Sar’s pedigree.
“Edwin brings a wealth of experience to the team,” stated Ferguson. “He is an international goalkeeper with proven class.”
Van der Sar won four Premier League titles, the Champions League, Club World Cup, two League Cups, three Community Shields.
He was the hero in Moscow, saving Nicolas Anelka’s penalty in the shootout, as we conquered Europe in 2008 and was also in two beaten sides in other finals, including his 266th and last appearance for the Reds in 2011, against Barcelona at Wembley.
