Official: End of the road for United legend as poor season with Championship club costs him his job

Middlesbrough have confirmed the sacking of former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.

Carrick took charge of Middlesbrough in October 2022, in what was his first role in management. He steered Boro to a play-off finish in the 2022/23 season, but the club has fallen short of the top six in each of the two campaigns since.

In the just-concluded 2024/25 campaign, Middlesbrough finished in 10th place in the Championship standings.

On Wednesday, the club issued a statement that read, “Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick.”

“Michael’s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club.”

“We’d like to thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future.”

“The club will be making no further comment at this stage.”

According to Sky Sports, Carrick met with Middlesbrough on Wednesday, including owner Steve Gibson. It was at this meeting that his fate was decided.

It’s understood that the club felt it was the right time to part ways with Carrick after three years in the dugout.

The 43-year-old remains a popular figure at Middlesbrough despite his dismissal.

Carrick’s exit means that 17 of the 24 Championship clubs from last season have now undergone managerial changes since August.

Carrick retired from professional football at the end of the 2017/18 campaign, having made 464 appearances for United. He scored 24 goals for the Red Devils.
