Official: United win PL award for standout moment despite miserable season

Manchester United have clinched the Premier League’s Most Improbable Comeback award for their sensational 2-1 win over cross-town rivals Manchester City in December.

United endured a trainwreck 2024/25 campaign that saw them finish an embarrassing 15th place in the table.

The Red Devils suffered 18 top-flight defeats and amassed only 42 points. By most standards, it was a disappointing season, made even worse by the club’s failure to defeat Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. A win at San Mamés would have secured Champions League qualification for Ruben Amorim and his squad.

Still, the season was not without its sparks of magic, like the stirring comeback win against City on their own turf.

Josko Gvardiol gave City the lead just before the break, heading in a cross from Kevin de Bruyne.

United played well but it looked like they were heading for a defeat at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s men, but Amad had other ideas.

The Ivorian came alive in the final moments of the match, first winning a penalty for United after being brought down in the box by Matheus Nunes.

Bruno Fernandes made no mistake from the spot-kick as he sent Ederson the wrong way.

Amad went on to net the winner in the 90th minute, latching onto a sublime pass from Lisandro Martinez, expertly controlling it, rounding Ederson, and calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net.

It was a memorable comeback for United, with Amad at the heart of everything. The Ivorian finished the season with an impressive eight goals and as many assists in 26 top-flight appearances.

He of course missed a big chunk of the season with an injury.

That remarkable turnaround in December has seen United claim the Premier League’s Most Improbable Comeback award.
